Brockovich in N.C. for river power rights fight
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. Environmental activist Erin Brockovich is adding a little star power to the fight over whether Alcoa Inc. should keep profiting from dams on North Carolina's Yadkin River.
Brockovich will be at the Capital City Club in Raleigh on Tuesday to discuss the dam relicensing issue with state legislators. She has an evening speech at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem.
The dams were built to power an Alcoa aluminum smelter, which has since closed down. Alcoa has earned millions of dollars a year in profit selling the electricity.
Gov. Beverly Perdue sided with those opposing Alcoa getting another license to operate the dams for up to half a century. State lawmakers have considered legislation creating a public body that would hold the dam licenses if Alcoa doesn't get them.
