Congressman asks FERC to allow state to argue for Alcoa dams

A North Carolina member of Congress has asked the federal agency reviewing ALCOA’s application to operate its four dams on the Yadkin River to allow the state time to present its case.

Rep. Larry Kissell, a Democrat representing the 8th District, sent a letter to the Federal Regulatory Energy Commission requesting Gov. Beverly Perdue and the state receive “sufficient time to present its new evidence as to why Alcoa’s application for relicensure should be denied and further, why FERC should recapture the license and transfer it to the State of North Carolina.”

Last month, FERC allowed the state a “late intervention” to become an official party to the process of ALCOA’s relicensing. State legislatures have proposed a state-run trust to take over the four hydroelectric dams operated by Alcoa Power Generating, Inc.
